The leader of the Muslim Brotherhood organization has called on Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to step down from the leadership of the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP), form a transitional government and hold free elections in the country. Mohammed Badih, who was elected January 16 to head the organization, the largest opposition group in Egypt, also called on Mubarak to open the Rafah border crossing with the Israeli-besieged Gaza Strip so as to a open a lifeline for the Palestinians of the enclave governed by the militant group Hamas. Badih's remarks came in an interview with the BBC Arabic Service broadcast Monday morning (Jan 25). President Mubarak Sunday defended Egypt's role as a mediator to heal the rift in Palestinian ranks and denounced internal and external criticism of his policies by those "who do nothing for the Palestinian cause except to exploit it for their own interests." He spoke on Egyptian Police Day (Jan 25).
